Eight Walls, One Afternoon

THE SHORT VERSION

A one-afternoon mural drive on Knect (demo listings) covers eight walls from Soul Sounds on Degnan Blvd in Leimert Park through Watts, Willowbrook, Compton and Lynwood to Morning Tide on Anaheim St in Long Beach, about thirty miles.

Eight murals, from Leimert Park to Long Beach, in about thirty miles.
Start at Soul Sounds on Degnan Blvd and finish at Morning Tide on Anaheim St at sunset.
Look from the sidewalk; most walls are on businesses, schools and homes.

Murals are the one kind of art in this city you do not need a ticket, a gallery or an opening for. You need a full tank, a free afternoon and somebody to read the map. Here are eight walls in one drive, north to south, finishing at the water at sunset.

HOW TO LOOK AT A MURAL

Park and get out. Murals are painted to be seen from across the street and then up close, and they look different at each distance. Find the artist's mark, usually low in a corner. Look for the faces: muralists often paint the people who helped. And stay on the sidewalk. These walls are on businesses, schools and people's homes.

THE ROUTE
1Soul Sounds, Degnan Blvd, Leimert Park. Marcus Dade. Horns, records and dancers in purple, gold and teal on the side of a record shop. Go inside after. Start here around noon.
2Ancestors Gate, S Central Ave, Los Angeles. Sol Arceneaux. Adinkra symbols and Mesoamerican step patterns woven into one border on a schoolyard wall, with the profiles of the students who painted it.
3Grandmother's Garden, E 103rd St, Watts. Paloma Quintero. Two storeys of an elder's hands holding seeds. The Watts Towers are minutes away; go if you have never been.
4Blue Line, Willowbrook Ave, Willowbrook. The Alameda Wall Crew. Silver and blue waves and commuters under the rail overpass. Best seen when a train goes over.
5Hub City Harvest, Rosecrans Ave at Wilmington Ave, Compton. Sol Arceneaux. Growers and their families under one big sun on a corner market. Painted with eleven teenagers. Stop for tacos nearby.
6Riders of Richland, W Caldwell St, Compton. Sol Arceneaux. Riders heading for the mountains at sunset, on the streets where the horses still live. You may see a real one.
7Library Dreams, Long Beach Blvd, Lynwood. Paloma Quintero. Kids reading books that open into galaxies, on the side of a library.
8Morning Tide, E Anaheim St, Long Beach. Dara Chhim. A Black and Cambodian American family fishing off the pier at sunrise. Get here for the late light, then drive to the water.

THREE TO KNOW

Sol Arceneaux paints with crews of teenagers and has three walls on this route. If you see her working, the crew is usually happy to explain the grid.

Paloma Quintero paints at the scale of buildings and keeps the detail of a portrait. Grandmother's Garden is two storeys of hands.

Dara Chhim grew up in Long Beach's Cambodian community, a few blocks from Morning Tide. It is the newest wall on the drive.

ADD A WALL

Every wall on this list is in the Murals room, with a map pin. If you know one that should be there, add it. If you want to paint one, read how a wall actually gets painted and who pays for it.

A note on this guide: the murals and muralists are demo listings created for the Knect preview, and the photographs were generated with Higgsfield AI. The streets and neighbourhoods are real; the Watts Towers are too.
