§ THE SHORT VERSION
Kendrick Lamar was born in Compton in 1987 and became the first artist from outside classical and jazz to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, taking the 2018 award for DAMN. His 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d city is set entirely in the Compton he grew up in, and he co-founded the creative company pgLang to build projects on his own terms.
Born in Compton in 1987. The first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, in 2018, for DAMN. His 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d city is widely regarded as one of the great American records about a single city.
The Pulitzer for Music had gone to classical composers, and eventually to jazz, every year since 1943. Then it went to a rap album about Rosecrans and Central. The important part is not that he won it. It is that he won it without smoothing anything out. good kid, m.A.A.d city is subtitled a short film, and it plays like one, set on real streets with the real names left in. To Pimp a Butterfly pulled from jazz, funk and Black political thought and offered no glossary.
He talked to us at full complexity and let the rest of the world catch up. It did. The Pulitzer Went to Compton is the long version of that argument.
The map on those records is literal enough to walk. good kid, m.A.A.d city, the geography lays the album over the actual streets, corner by corner, and Music & Movement traces the line from Eazy-E and Dr. Dre forward to him.
Grammys across multiple albums. A Super Bowl halftime stage in 2025. And pgLang, the creative company he co-founded so the projects could be built on his own terms rather than a label's. That instinct is old and it is the whole lesson of this wing: Ray Charles asked for his masters in 1959, and everybody serious since has been asking the same question.
Whatever your Compton is, that is your material. Use the real names.
The only name in this room so far.
