In 2018 the prize that usually goes to symphonies went to a rap album about growing up on Rosecrans. Kendrick Lamar did not change to win it. The prize changed.

Kendrick Lamar won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album DAMN., making him the first artist outside classical and jazz to win it since the prize began in 1943. He did it without smoothing out the specifics of Compton, where he grew up, which is the reason the win mattered.
The Pulitzer Prize for Music had been handed out since 1943. For seventy five years it went to classical composers, and eventually to jazz. Then in 2018 the committee gave it to DAMN., a rap album by Kendrick Lamar Duckworth of Compton, California. First artist outside classical and jazz to ever hold it.

The Long Game
The Pulitzer sits in the middle of a longer story about ownership and craft. Grammy wins across multiple albums. A Super Bowl halftime stage. A creative company, pgLang, that he co-founded to build projects on his own terms. Every step, the work stayed dense, personal, and rooted in the city that raised him. That instinct to own the company rather than rent your name to one runs from Ray Charles asking for his masters in 1959 straight through to now.
What We Take From It
You do not have to leave home in your art to go everywhere in your career. Kendrick put Compton in the Library of Congress conversation by refusing to write about anywhere else. Whatever your Compton is, that is your material. Use the real names, name the real streets, and do not write a glossary for people who were not there.
