Every long-running show has a character the audience knows is the best one, and a structure that will not let them be the lead. Snowfall had two, and The Drop finally gives them the car keys.
The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premiered September 8 on FX and Hulu. Wanda and Leon, in 1990s Los Angeles, with West Coast hip-hop detonating around them and Wanda setting out to build a record empire.
A record empire. Not a hustle, not a survival story. An empire, which is a different genre, and choosing it is the most interesting decision the show has made before anybody watched a frame.
The 1990s in this part of the world is not a backdrop, it is the event. That is the decade the sound made here stopped being regional and became the default setting of American popular music, and the people who owned the labels made generational money while plenty of the people who made the records did not.
A show about a woman trying to own the company rather than be signed to one is therefore about the exact fault line of the era. Eazy-E had already proved it could be done from this city, and Ruthless is why an industry had to come to Compton instead of the other way round.
“Everybody remembers who was on the records. The show is about who owned them.”
Whether Wanda's business decisions are allowed to be competent. The default move in this genre is to make a woman's ambition a tragic flaw and let the collapse be the story. The braver version lets her be good at it and makes the obstacles external, which is also the more accurate version of that decade.
And the needle drops, obviously, though the more telling detail is which songs it can afford and which it has to work around. Licensing tells you what a production believes about itself.
Straight Outta Compton is on Netflix this month, which makes for an obvious double bill. For the version with the actual artifacts, Music & Movement has lyric sheets, mixing-board photographs and the microphone from a 1989 N.W.A session, and the twelve streets a Pulitzer came out of are a short walk from it.
Good month. A Different World lands on the 24th and the group chat is going to be busy.
