§ THE SHORT VERSION

Marcus Dade is a painter based in Compton, CA (a demo persona on Knect).

Marcus Dade paints the people of Compton the way medieval workshops painted saints: flat, frontal, on wood panel, and set against real 23-karat gold leaf. A former sign painter and auto-body apprentice, he learned gilding from a frame restorer in Gardena and candy paint from his uncle's lowrider club. His subjects are barbers, swap-meet mothers and the young men who lean on cars in front of their houses on Sunday. The gold, he says, is the point: it is the most expensive thing in the room and it belongs behind them.
