WHAT IT IS

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. One form. It asks about your family's income, and it decides what help you qualify for: grants (money you do NOT pay back), work-study (a campus job reserved for you), and federal loans (borrowed money at fairer rates than a bank).

The first word of the name is doing real work: FREE. Anyone charging you to file it is scamming you.

1"We make too much." Maybe, but the form also feeds state aid and many school scholarships. Plenty of aid decisions start with the FAFSA no matter your income. File and find out; guessing costs money.
