The Benefits Check Older Adults Skip

THE SHORT VERSION

Millions of older adults who qualify for Medicare Savings Programs, which pay Medicare premiums and sometimes deductibles, and for Extra Help with prescription drug costs, never enrol. State Health Insurance Assistance Programs provide free, unbiased counselling on all of it, and property tax relief for seniors exists in most states and is often not automatic.

Medicare Savings Programs pay Medicare premiums and sometimes deductibles, and millions who qualify never enrol.
Extra Help substantially reduces prescription drug costs and often carries automatic eligibility.
SHIP counselling is free, unbiased and not selling anything, unlike most Medicare advice.
Senior property tax relief exists in most states and usually has to be applied for.

There is a specific category of unclaimed money in this country, and it belongs to people in their seventies who are being careful with every dollar.

CALL SHIP FIRST

Every state runs a State Health Insurance Assistance Program, offering free, unbiased, one-to-one Medicare counselling. Not a broker. Not an insurance agent. Counsellors who are not paid on what you choose.

This matters because almost all readily available Medicare advice comes from somebody earning a commission. SHIP counsellors are the exception and the service is free.

The other essential call is your Area Agency on Aging, which maps everything local: meals, transport, in-home support, caregiver help.

THE TWO BIG ONES

Medicare Savings Programs. State-run programs that pay the Medicare Part B premium and, depending on the tier, deductibles and coinsurance. That premium alone is a meaningful monthly sum, and millions of eligible people are not enrolled.

Income limits are higher than most people assume, and several states have eliminated or raised asset limits. The single most common reason for not applying is an out-of-date belief about the cutoff.

Extra Help, also called the Low Income Subsidy, which sharply reduces prescription drug costs. Enrolment in a Medicare Savings Program or Medicaid often qualifies you automatically, but not always, so apply directly through Social Security if there is any doubt.

“The premium comes out every month whether or not somebody told you it did not have to.”
ALSO WORTH CHECKING

Property tax relief. Most states offer senior exemptions, freezes or deferrals, and they are frequently not automatic. For a homeowner on a fixed income this is often the single largest annual saving available, and it requires an application to the county assessor.

SNAP for seniors, which has simplified rules for older adults and much higher participation gaps. Many assume a small benefit is not worth the paperwork; the medical expense deduction for people over 60 often makes the benefit larger than expected.

Senior nutrition programs, including congregate meals and home delivery. Senior wellness and hot lunch is the local one, and senior tech help exists for the part where all of this now happens online.

Utility discounts, which usually have specific senior tiers. The full list is here.

DO IT IN ONE SITTING

Gather once: photo ID, Medicare card, proof of income, recent bank statements, a utility bill and the property tax statement if you own. Nearly every application wants the same documents.

Then call SHIP, the Area Agency on Aging, and the county assessor. Three calls, one afternoon.

AND A WARNING

This demographic is targeted relentlessly. Nobody from Medicare calls you unsolicited, and no legitimate agency asks to be paid in gift cards. The three tells are here, and the sentence that ends most of it is: *I do not make decisions on the phone.*

§ QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
What is a Medicare Savings Program?
A state-run program that pays the Medicare Part B premium and, at some tiers, deductibles and coinsurance. Income limits are higher than most people assume and several states have raised or removed asset limits, yet millions who qualify never enrol.
What is Extra Help with prescription costs?
A federal subsidy, also called the Low Income Subsidy, that sharply reduces Medicare prescription drug costs. Enrolment in a Medicare Savings Program or Medicaid often qualifies you automatically, but applying directly through Social Security is worthwhile if there is any doubt.
Where can I get free Medicare advice?
From your State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP, which provides free one-to-one counselling from people who are not paid on what you choose. Almost all other readily available Medicare advice comes from brokers earning commission.
Do seniors get property tax relief automatically?
Usually not. Most states offer senior exemptions, freezes or deferrals, and they generally require an application to the county assessor. For a homeowner on a fixed income it is often the largest single annual saving available.
