Thirty Five New Adults Who Are There to Listen

THE SHORT VERSION

Compton Unified School District welcomed 35 graduate-level interns through the Compton Social Emotional Intern Institute, Class of 2026, to provide additional social-emotional and wellness support to students across the district. Families can request that support directly, and schools are generally required to respond to a written request for a student support assessment.

Compton Unified brought in 35 graduate-level interns through the Compton Social Emotional Intern Institute, Class of 2026.
Their job is social-emotional and wellness support for students across the district.
You can ask for support directly. Put the request in writing and keep a copy.
A child who is acting out and a child who has gone quiet are often the same problem. Only one of them gets noticed.

School districts do not usually announce the arrival of counselors, which is a shame, because for a family in a hard season that is the most useful announcement there is.

WHAT ARRIVED

Compton Unified welcomed 35 graduate-level interns as the Compton Social Emotional Intern Institute Class of 2026, to provide additional social-emotional and wellness support for students across the district.

Thirty five additional trained adults whose actual job is to sit with a young person who is struggling. In a district where, like most, the counselor-to-student ratio has never been what anybody wanted, that is real.

WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN IT SOUNDS

The students who get support are, overwhelmingly, the ones who are disruptive enough to be noticed. The ones who go quiet, stop turning work in, stop looking up, get read as lazy or fine.

They are usually the same problem wearing different clothes. A parent who knows support exists can ask for it before a grade collapses, which is a completely different conversation than asking after.

“The loud kid gets the referral. The quiet kid gets the failing grade. Same child, different volume.”
HOW TO ACTUALLY ASK
1Email rather than call, and keep a copy. A written request creates a record and a record creates follow-up. Copy the principal.
2Say what changed, not what is wrong. "She has stopped doing homework since December and she used to love this class" is far more actionable than a diagnosis you are not supposed to have to make.
3Ask specifically: who on campus provides social-emotional support, how does my child get connected, and what is the wait.
4Ask for the plan in writing, including who is doing what and when you will hear back.
5If nothing happens in two weeks, reply to your own email and copy the district office. You are not being difficult. You are creating the paper trail that makes systems move.
WHAT THE SCHOOL CANNOT DO

A school counselor is not a therapist and an intern is not a treatment plan. If what your child needs is clinical care, ask for the referral and go outside as well. A free mental health drop-in takes people without an appointment, and the health directory lists who is taking clients.

And take the adult side of this seriously. A therapist on why the people holding everyone together run dry is the companion piece, because a household running on empty is the context the child is living inside.

If it is a crisis right now, call or text 988.

§ QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Does Compton Unified have mental health support for students?
Yes. The district welcomed 35 graduate-level interns through the Compton Social Emotional Intern Institute, Class of 2026, specifically to provide additional social-emotional and wellness support to students across the district.
How do I ask my child's school for counseling support?
Email rather than call so there is a record, copy the principal, and describe what changed rather than offering a diagnosis. Ask who on campus provides social-emotional support, how your child gets connected, and what the wait is. Request the plan in writing.
What if the school does not respond?
Reply to your own email after about two weeks and copy the district office. Following up on a written request is not being difficult, it is how a paper trail turns into action.
Is a school counselor the same as a therapist?
No. School counselors and interns provide support and connection, not clinical treatment. If a child needs clinical care, ask for the referral and also seek care outside the school. In a crisis, call or text 988.
