§ THE PORTRAIT
Shirley Raines
§ THE SHORT VERSION
Shirley Raines was born in Compton and founded Beauty 2 the Streetz, a nonprofit registered in 2019 that brings hair services, makeup, food, clothing and hygiene supplies to thousands of unhoused people on Skid Row in Los Angeles. She was named CNN Hero of the Year in 2021 and died on January 27, 2026, at 58.
Shirley Raines was from Compton, and she is the answer to the question of what one person with no budget can actually do.
In 1990 her two-year-old son Demetrius died of accidental poisoning. She has said plainly that she spent years afterward not okay, and that what eventually helped her face the grief was something the world treats as trivial: self-care. Getting her hair done. Being looked at like she was worth looking at.
Hold on to that, because it is the entire design of what she built.
She took the thing that helped her and carried it to Skid Row. Hair. Color. Makeup. Then food, clothing, hygiene supplies and safety items, for thousands of unhoused people, week after week. She registered it as a nonprofit in 2019.
The insight other charities miss is that she did not start with what people need to survive. She started with what people need to feel human, and let the survival supplies ride along with it. A hot meal keeps somebody alive. A fresh color job tells somebody they still count. She insisted on doing both, and she was right.
> Everybody serves the hungry. She served the dignity.
CNN named her Hero of the Year in 2021, with a 100,000 dollar grant. She won the People's Choice Award for The People's Champion in 2022, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2025, and was named to the TIME100 Creators list that same year.
Shirley Raines died on January 27, 2026, at 58, of hypertensive heart disease.
She was not funded when she started. She had a loss, a skill, and a van. If you are looking at your own block wondering what you could possibly do about anything: she started with one thing she personally knew helped, and she gave that thing away repeatedly until it became an institution. Food boxes, clinics and drop-in services near you all run on people who did exactly that.
The only name in this room so far.
