Ryan Coogler, born in Oakland in 1986, is the filmmaker behind Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther and Sinners. Black Panther earned more than a billion dollars worldwide and was the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Born in Oakland in 1986. Played football, studied film at USC, and made his first feature about a killing at a train station in his own city.
Fruitvale Station won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance in 2013. Creed followed, then Black Panther, which earned more than a billion dollars worldwide and became the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture.
His 2025 film Sinners, set in the Mississippi Delta and built on the blues, was an original story that became a box office event. He runs Proximity Media with his partners so the next filmmakers have a door.
